Pickleball has taken the country by storm, and it's not just for the old people. Even the 20-somethings are playing, if they can just get over the name. Unlike tennis, where beginners spend most of their time walking/running to pick up the balls, pickleball is easy to learn and play, though hard to get really good at. But the holy grail for pickleball players is to live in a community that has pickleball courts where you can meet your friends and also your neighbors. We have a plethora of condo and townhome communities in the southeast valley (Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler) to suggest.

Some communities have retrofitted tennis or basketball courts for pickleball. For example, Rhythm, a newer condo community in Chandler has a "sport court" that can be used for basketball or pickleball.

Master Planned Communities and Pickleball

The big master planned communities have pickleball in a big way, though you may have to drive or ride a bike to the facilities from your residence. Ocotillo, in Gilbert, has 8 courts at the Sunset Shores park, just a short distance from Cays at Ocotillo, a popular newer condo community. The Lakes at Tempe has 4 courts at its Racquet Club. Dobson Ranch has 8 courts at its Los Altos recreation center.

Active Adult Condos and Townhomes with Pickleball

It's a no-brainer for 55+ communities to add some pickleball courts, and they have in the southeast valley. Sunland Springs has 12 fenced courts, with shaded seating area, a nice feature in the desert heat. Fountain of the Sun has 3 courts and some organized play. Leisure World in Mesa has courts as well.

Some Considerations For Pickleball Lovers

When buying a condo or townhomet at a community with pickleball courts, there are some things to consider:

• If you live near a pickleball court, be prepared for noise. The incessant "thwock" of the ball hitting a paddle is annoying for some. But you'll also have to "put up" with lots of excited people shouting at a great shot.
• Consider whether you want court reservation abilities. For people that want a weekly game with some friends, you might want to be able to reserve a court. Some of the larger master planned communities have court reservation systems.
• Are there any group play opportunities? Organized play is a great way to meet new people and enjoy playing with a wide variety of players. Look for "challenge" courts, where you can move in to replace the losers after a game, or some other kind of organized play.
