Live in West Mesa if you want to be close to everything. Residents here are an easy drive to the 202 and the 101 to get into Phoenix, Tempe or Scottsdale. Though many condos in were built in the 80's, you'll still find some newer communities, like Sanctuary on Center townhomes.
Downtown Tempe and Mill Avenue is the epicenter of the Tempe action. Residents here can walk to ASU, Tempe Town Lake and Mill Avenue bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Downtown Tempe is also home to all the Tempe Lofts. You'll also find quite a few 2 and 3 story townhomes as well as low rise condo communities.
Not quite downtown, Central Tempe around Southern Avenue is close to the action as well as the highways to get around the valley. Condos in Central Tempe are usually 2-3 stories, mostly built in the 80's. The area also has several older one and two story townhome communities.

The focal point of Tempe Town Lake is the lake, which is 220 acres in size. Next to the lake is the 25-acre Tempe Beach Park, established as the city's first public park in 1931. You'll see the locals running or walking on the winding pathway, and the park is home to events like Tempe's famous New Year's Eve Block Party and July Fourth celebration.
